Ray Davies siempre ha sido un contador de historias, de buenas historias. Y con Soap Opera (1975) acertó plenamente. El álbum, que corresponde a su etapa más "teatral" (entre la producción discográfica de los sesenta y el rock más urbano y sofisticado de trabajos como "Misfits" o "Sleepwalker", ya en su etapa con Arista Records) narra la historia de una estrella de rock, un músico del star system, llamado Starmaker, que, bien por falta de inspiración a la hora de componer, bien por necesidad de impregnarse de las rutinas cotidianas de la gente de a pie, intercambia su vida con Norman, oficinista gris, de los de 9 a 5, casado con Andrea y con la cerveza y los amigos del pub de toda la vida. Starmaker acabará olvidándose del estrellato en brazos de Andrea y terminará siendo "un rostro más en la marea de rostros anónimos" que pueblan las calles. Las estrellas del rock pueden desaparecer, pero no su música...

A Soap Opera es un disco sólido, encantador, lleno de buena música, a medio camino entre el rock, el pop de factura exquisita, el blues, los devaneos cabareteros, operísticos, la música de pub, los pianos honky tonk y los coros. Todo encaja con perfección y maestría, y uno se enamora de la música de The Kinks, y de la voz de Ray Davies, que tiene la rara habilidad de meternos de lleno en la historia, con su voz de crooner, que a veces vacila, al borde de la ebriedad, y a veces mece el ánimo, en un susurro delicado y melódico ... ¡Qué inmenso disco, memorable! Debemos retrotraernos a mediados de 1975 para llegar a entender como estos dos viejos amigos decidieron volver a colaborar en un disco conjunto. Durante una actuación del texano en el Greek Theatre de California a mediados de julio, Stephen invitó a subir al escenario a su antiguo compañero de andanzas Neil Young, lo sucedido allí tuvo que satisfacer a ambos ya que meses después, concretamente en noviembre, volvieron a repetir la jugada en el Stanford University´s Maples Pavilion. A raíz de estos encuentros los dos "bufalos" decidieron ponerse manos a la obra para llevar a cabo la grabación de un trabajo en estudio. El lugar elegido fueron los Studios Criteria de Miami y durante cinco meses, febrero a junio, estuvieron dando cuerpo a su nuevo álbum. Para la elaboración del mismo, decidieron contar con la que era hasta esos momentos banda de acompañamiemto de Stephen Stills: Joe Vitale (batería y flauta), George "Chocolate" Perry (bajo), Jerry Aiello (órgano y piano) y Joe Lala (percusión). Trancurridas algunas sesiones el tándem Stills-Young invitó a sus antiguos compañeros David Crosby y Graham Nash, con el objetivo de que añadieran algunas voces a un par de temas, estos decidieron involucrarse en el proyecto con canciones propias, por lo que durante un escaso período de tiempo se contempló la idea de que surgiera un nuevo trabajo del cuarteto. Finalmente viendo que la dirección que iba a tomar el proyecto no les interesaba, Stephen y Neil optaron por eliminar todo rastro del ex Byrds y el ex Hollies y continuar por donde lo habían dejado. Una vez finalizado el trabajo, Stills y Young decidieron salir a la carretera con el objetivo de promocionar un álbum que en breve estaría en el mercado. El 23 de junio de 1976 en el Pine Knob Theatre de Miami se iniciaba una gira que iba a recorrer gran parte de los Estados Unidos y que duraría hasta mediados de octubre. Los recitales fueron un auténtico éxito de crítica y público, con actuaciones que llegaban casi a las tres horas y donde los chicos además de tocar los temas de su nuevo trabajo hacían un recorrido por todas sus etapas: Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, carreras en solitario. Existen un gran número de bootlegs que demuestran lo fantástico que tuvieron que ser estas actuaciones.

Han pasado 10 años desde Magnification y muchas cosas en el mundo Yes. La principal, la retirada de Jon Anderson de las filas del grupo, aquejado por una enfermedad que le llevó a apartarse de los escenarios, al principio de forma temporal, y de modo permanente en la actualidad. Howe, Squire y White, deseando proseguir con la fascinante aventura que supone Yes, buscaron un substituto: Benoit David, cantante de una banda tributo a Yes, dotado de una voz prácticamente idéntica a la de Anderson. Tras meses de giras y cohesión, se decidieron a entrar en el estudio de grabación. Oliver Wakeman, hijo de Rick, dejó los teclados vacantes al no poder participar en el proyecto. Y en esas estaban cuando Geoff Downes, miembro de Yes en Drama y teclista de Asia, se unió al asunto. Como colofón sólo faltaba la mano del productor responsable de modernizar el sonido de Yes en los ochenta, Trevor Horn, y un envoltorio a la altura de las mejores producciones de Yes, obra del genial Roger Dean.
Fly from Here incluye una larga composición de corte épico, de 25 minutos, que en palabras de Squire une lo mejor del sonido Yes de los setenta con las infinitas posibilidades que brinda la tecnología actual. La suite es una revisión expandida de un tema que Yes compuso para Drama, y que por motivos de espacio quedó fuera de la edición de ese álbum. Entre las restantes piezas del disco, una aportación acústica de Steve Howe, y la composición que le da nombre y que ya puedes escuchar haciendo click en el enlace al pie de estas líneas por cortesía de la revista Rolling Stone. Pink Floyd y EMI Music, cuya asociación se remonta a 1967, acaban de anunciar el lanzamiento a partir del 26 de septiembre de 2011 de una serie de ediciones de su obra en CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, SACD (Super Audio CD), en todos los formatos digitales y para iPhone Apps. La legendaria banda, que se mantiene como uno de los artistas más exitosos, populares y emblemáticos de todos los tiempos, ha firmado recientemente un nuevo acuerdo con EMI para desarrollar una serie de lanzamientos multi-formato con material de archivo seleccionado por Pink Floyd y EMI durante un largo proceso.

Estos lanzamientos, bajo el lema Why Pink Floyd?..., se realizarán para satisfacer a la gran mayoría de los seguidores de la banda, mientras una serie de cajas super-deluxe están pensadas para los fans más fieles con sets multidiscos que contienen tomas alternativas, canciones no publicadas, películas restauradas de conciertos y una grabación de la legendaria actuación de The Dark Side Of The Moon en Wembley en 1974.

En este gran proyecto, además de los CD remasterizados Discovery y las cajas Immersion con CD/DVD/Blu-Ray y memorabilia, estarán las Experience Editions que añadirán al álbum clásico otro con contenido adicional para ofrecer una experiencia auditiva más profunda.

Roger Faxon, presidente de EMI Group, ha declarado: “Es una colaboración única entre EMI y uno de los grupos más creativos e influyentes de la historia. Hemos trabajado juntos durante más de un año en este proyecto que incorpora todos los elementos que ha hecho de Pink Floyd una de las fuerzas inspiradoras de la música moderna. Why Pink Floyd? La fotógrafa Jill Furmanovsky ha incluído en estos diseños y libretos fotografías inéditas y los colaboradores de Pink Floyd James Guthrie (en Estados Unidos) y Andy Jackson (en Reino Unido) se han encargado de las remasterizaciones digitales y de conseguir la máxima calidad en el sonido y los audiovisuales.

La documentalista Lana Topham ha supervisado meticulosamente la restauración de las películas históricas de Pink Floyd, incluyendo las de las cajas Immersion con The Dark Side Of The Moon y Wish You Were Here.

El primer lanzamiento estará disponible el 26 de septiembre de 2011 con ediciones deluxe expandidas y especiales de la obra maestra The Dark Side Of The Moon en los siguientes formatos: caja Immersion de seis discos; doble álbum Experience; LP de vinilo para coleccionistas y en varios formatos digitales. Además, los 14 álbumes de estudio se han remasterizado digitalmente y se lanzarán individualmente y en una caja con la colección completa.

Otras iniciativas incluyen un plan de marketing digital para que los usuarios y admiradores de la banda puedan hacer sus aportaciones creativas a la música de Pink Floyd, y iPhone Apps también creará una experiencia única para las grabaciones históricas.

El 7 de noviembre de 2011 comenzará la segunda fase del proyecto que se centrará en el álbum Wish You Were Here con los siguientes lanzamientos: caja Immersion con cinco discos; edición Experience con dos discos, ambas con material extra procedente del concierto de Wembley en 1974, incluyendo además 20 minutos de grabación en vivo de Shine On You Crazy Diamond y la única grabación de Wish You Were Here realizada por el legendario violinista de jazz Stephane Grappelli. También se editarán versiones en LP vinilo y en formatos digitales.

Al mismo tiempo se publicará A Foot In The Door: The Best Of Pink Floyd, una colección de sus canciones de mayor éxito que se reúnen en un disco por primera vez en la historia de la banda.

La esperada versión en 5.1 de Wish You Were Here mezclada por James Guthrie también se lanzará a través del sello independiente Acoustic Sounds.

The Wall, que ha vendido 25 millones de discos dobles y se ha convertido en las últimas tres décadas en un símbolo cultural y político social, será objeto también de un tratamiento exhaustivo cuando se publique el 27 de febrero de 2012 en una caja deluxe Immersion con siete discos y una edición Experience con tres, así como en vinilo y formatos digitales.

En 1967 apareció Pink Floyd, banda formada por Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason y Richard Wright. En 1968 Barrett dejó el grupo, siendo reemplazado por David Gilmour. Syd Barrett falleció en 2006 y Richard Wright en 2008. A lo largo de su carrera y hasta hoy, Pink Floyd ha vendido más de 200 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo.

In a remarkable career spanning six decades, singer-songwriter Paul Simon has amassed 9 Grammy awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a member of Simon & Garfunkel, then in 2001 as a solo performer and composer. Encompassing nine studio albums - all contained herein - Simon's catalogue is one of the most diverse, literate, adventurous, and musically rich in all of popular music. Simon is an American treasure, and this awesome collection celebrates his ever-growing legacy.
Look closely at the title to this nine-disc box set -- it's Studio Recordings, not the complete studio recordings, which means there are things missing, and they will be things that you will miss. Naturally, the emphasis on studio recordings means that neither of Paul Simon's two live albums -- 1974's Live Rhymin' or 1991's Concert in the Park -- are here, but this also doesn't contain all of Simon's released studio recordings, somehow bypassing "Slip Slidin' Away," the Top Five single originally released as one of two new songs on his 1977 compilation, Greatest Hits, Etc. Since that single was not on a proper album, it has been overlooked on this box, which serves up remastered and expanded digipack reissues of Simon's nine solo albums from 1972's Paul Simon to 2000's You're the One. Since these reissues not only sound terrific -- the clarity, particularly on the first two albums, is startling -- but are graced with genuinely interesting bonus tracks, the omission of the original version of "Slip Slidin' Away" is a little easier to forgive, particularly since an excellent, loose-limbed alternate version is added to Still Crazy After All These Years and "Stranded in a Limousine," the other new song on Greatest Hits, Etc., finally reappears on CD as a bonus track on One Trick Pony. These are only two bonus tracks of 30 that are spread over these nine albums. With the exception of "Stranded in a Limousine," "Thelma" on Rhythm of the Saints (an outtake originally released as part of 1993 box set 1964-1993), and three live tracks on You're the One, all of these bonus tracks are previously unreleased. While there is a handful of rare songs, the majority of these are either demos or works in progress, and they're fascinating, such as a radically different version of "Duncan" with an entirely different narrative, different final verses on "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" and "Loves Me Like a Rock," and a skeletal working version of "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" containing little more than Simon's vocal and a fretless bass. By and large, these are significant additions to Simon's catalog, and combined with the terrific remastering, they make this essential for any serious Simon fan (although it would have been nice if either the individual albums or the overall box were given new liner notes, particularly since Rhino's similar Jerry Garcia box set, All Good Things, had such a stellar booklet). I POOH ES UNA DE LAS BANDAS ITALIANAS MÁS ANTIGUAS EN ACTIVO. FORMADOS EN 1966, CON MÁS DE 50 DISCOS A SUS ESPALDAS, GRABARON ALGUNAS OBRAS MEMORABLES EN LOS SETENTA. A DIFERENCIA DE PFM, BANCO O LE ORME, PREFIRIERON DECANTARSE POR LA VERTIENTE MÁS SENTIMENTAL Y ROMÁNTICA DEL ROCK SINFÓNICO. ESTE ÁLBUM, "UN POCO DE NUESTRO TIEMPO MEJOR", ES DIGNO DE SER ESCUCHADO DE PRINCIPIO A FIN. QUE NADIE SE LO PIERDA. SENCILLAMENTE EXQUISITO.

Well, well, well, this is probably the most beautiful Pooh's record. In fact it was the least successfull of all their 70s productions. Almost nobody remebers nowadays a single track of it. In fact no hits were then picked off it. The best thing is that the full orchestral arrangements are finally equaled by the typical sympho-rock instruments: mellotron, clavinet, minimoog, harpsichord and celesta. Warning: don't assume that the band changed their mood (I won't be responsible for such a mistake... I won't give you compensation...); the band only went further, from the starting point album Parsifal. So, what we have here is still melodic and soft sympho-prog. Don't expect surprises... after all this is not the place where exigent prog lovers' ears have to search for. I'd say that Pooh play a "home-is-where-the-heart-is" pop-rock. That's it. But now, I have to be honest with you all: the music of this band has become more serious, deep, extended. In other words: the apex of Pooh's sympho-pop with more than a simple prog touch... without a doubt. It's not a case that the album opens with the sweet notes of PRELUDIO like in every respectable classic opera. It's not a case that some expert reviewer has already pointed out some Puccini's hints in keyboardist Roby Facchinetti. Wonderful opener, by the way, powerful and sweet orchestral movement with slight crescendo and drumming in the second part. The prelude carries the listener to CREDO ("I believe"), an exciting piece that alternates strong orchestral sound (with also some absolutely good ahhhh ahhhh choruses) with a more rythmic part (mid-paced: excellent bass). Powerful vocals by Roby Facchinetti himself. Una Storia che Fa Ridere ("a story that makes laugh") is somehow a step below ... so let me jump to the fourth track: OCEANO. Wonderful. One of the highlights of the entire album. A solitary man sailing far from home, has to face (and taste) what real infinite seascapes mean... this one has a strong prog structure with orchestral shifting moods and uptempos. Harpsichord appears for the first time ever. A shady number with wonderful touches of electrig guitar here and there by Dodi Battaglia and a shocking (typically orchestral) outro... Wow!! The next one FANTASIA is a gentle melody with acoustic guitar... good but nothing spectacular... let's jump again. What follows is still another gem: MEDITERRANEO, the second and last instrumental track of the album, as the opener. Completely different though. Folk structure: acoustic guitar and mandolin plus delicate xylophone (and some low fleeting orchestral movements). Simple melody but superb delicate performance. It tastes really of mediterranean sea,oregano and small islands. Bells also in the final part. To be heard! Now it's the time of ELEONORA, MIA MADRE, the first track penned (and sung) by drummer Stefano D'Orazio. Someone described it as "a decadent melodic portait"... it certainly would have pleased big shots of the end of the XIX century ... (Oscar Wilde, fort instance). Wonderful the two parts' interchange (song and classical sad ballad...). Somehow obsessive and delicate at the very same time! The album still stands high with the track named 1966: emotional, aching ... by many considered the best one ... who can say... it features tasteful sparse moog, mellotron and wonderful guitar solos. Romantic in its essence... amazing harpsichord in the final part! ORIENT EXPRESS is a nice tune but nothing special... it remebers me of LATTE E MIELE's Passio Secundum Mattheum... but probably it remains the least interesting. Another sweet and delicate melody, though... (good enough for another romantic dinner ...). IL TEMPO, UNA DONNA, LA CITTA' ... that's the longest (over 10 mns) and proggiest track... for the nth time... it's the album's closer (as usual in most part of the Pooh's discography). An epic number, as expressive as the Parsifal song of the previous record. Less joyful, though... darker somehow... wonderful flutes emerge from the orchestral sweet chaos... and then, after over two minutes of mysterious intro... the song begins. A similar outro (other 2 minutes) closes the album after enigmatic and poetic lyrics: "the air closes to silence, then a cloud of dust is raised around us. I close my eyes, then I open them and...". What is in the middle you ask... I say a wonderful masterwork, in my humble opinion: electric, acoustic and classic guitars, flutes, moog, strings, gong... great vocals sung by three of the band's members. A simple phrase to describe the song: "iniquitous as only time can be" (as they sing in the track). Surely, a great satisfying experience. Thanks God, Pooh did it! Terry Talbot and the band, Mason Proffit, have a rich history in American music. In August of 1969 Mason Proffit released Terry's first of thirty albums and changed the face of music forever. Terry was the front man and principle song writer for the band and penned their hit songs, Two Hangmen (politically charged and banned by the FCC), Eugene Pratt and Better Find Jesus. They recorded five albums on the Warner Bros. label and their opening acts included John Denver, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, and Dan Fogelberg. Terry's production skills and on-stage energy fused the band with the reputation as pioneers and innovators in the emerging country rock movement of the late 60's. And as stated by Bernie Leadon and Glen Frey, The Eagles were greatly influenced by Mason Proffit and followed the design of Two Hangmen for their Hotel California.

UNA JOYA DE LA DISCOGRAFÍA DE ARGENT QUE NO DEBE FALTAR EN NINGUNA COLECCIÓN. ROCK PROGRESIVO DE IMPECABLE FACTURA, MELÓDICO E INAGOTABLE.

This is Argents first effort without Russ Ballard and it doesn't miss. Russ did make some important contributions over the years and for many he was or should have been the primary focus of this band as he's talented and did write some of Argent's most notable songs; "Liar" and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" but this band existed and moved forward because of Rod Argent. This release and the last effort; "Counterpoints" are the two least known efforts by the group that were hardly recognized and quickly faded. Rod finally had the opportunity to complete the transformation of the bands sound that began with the "Nexus" release. He handles all the lead vocals and writes six of the seven songs. "Highwire" is the real standout. Clocking in at just over nine minutes it is a collage of keyboard and guitars, time changes, rock and roll, classical and jazz all captured and molded into an epic arrangment. The guitar work by the two new Argent members is not to be overlooked. Rodford and Henrit continue to drive the band onward as they always have.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the thirteenth studio album by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. It was released in the UK and US in September 1987. In 1985 guitarist David Gilmour began to assemble a group of musicians to work on his third solo album. At the end of 1986 he changed his mind, and decided that the new material would instead be included in a new Pink Floyd album. Subsequently Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright (who had left the group in 1979) were brought on board for the project. Although for legal reasons Wright could not be re-admitted to the band, he and Mason helped Gilmour craft what would become the first Pink Floyd album since the departure of lyricist and bass guitarist Roger Waters in December 1985. The album was recorded primarily on Gilmour's converted houseboat, Astoria.
Its production was marked by an ongoing legal dispute between Waters and the band as to who owned the rights to Pink Floyd's name, which was not resolved until several months after the album was released. Unlike most of Pink Floyd's studio albums, A Momentary Lapse of Reason has no central theme, and is instead a collection of rock songs written mostly by Gilmour and musician Anthony Moore. Although the album received mixed reviews and was derided by Waters, with the help of an enormously successful world tour it easily out-sold their previous album The Final Cut. A Momentary Lapse of Reason is certified multi-platinum in the US.

For Focus devotees this is perhaps Akkermans' finest solo effort as he makes use of many the same characteristics one would find on Focus recordings. There is a nice mix of classical, folk and rock pieces here including some work with small orchestral arrangements that all work splendidly. Akkerman's guitar work is tasteful and passionate throughout. This is a wonderful recording well worth owning (Amazon Review)

After leaving Yes, and while looking for some other musical project, Banks supported Blodwyn Pig for a brief period in late 1970, and guested as session musician on an album by Chris Harwood. In 1971 Banks formed Flash and sessions began for a first album, with Tony Kaye guesting on keyboards.The record appeared in 1972 (called simply Flash) and had a warm reception. Subsequent to Kaye's involvement, Banks took the dual role of guitarist and keyboardist. Flash recorded and released its second album (In the Can) in November that same year; and the third (Out of Our Hands) in 1973. Parallel to that, Banks and guitarist Jan Akkerman became friends and started to play and record together. Banks also played on an album by Roger Ruskin Spear at that time. In 1973, not long after the third and final Flash release, Banks released Two Sides of Peter Banks. Guest musicians included Akkerman, bassist John Wetton, drummer Phil Collins, guitarist Steve Hackett and fellow Flash members Ray Bennett and Mike Hough.

Musician, writer and video maker, Peter GABRIEL is one of the most prolific artist in the world and also one of the most loved musicians in prog-scene. He was the singer and front-man of GENESIS since 1967 to 1975, but that´s another story. GABRIEL started his solo career in 1977, and since then he has released 8 studio albums, 2 live albums, 3 original sound tracks and 3 compilations, always with the collaboration of a lot of different and great musicians and playing different musical styles. 1977 was the date of the release of Peter´s first album "Peter Gabriel 1", one year after "Peter Gabriel 2" was published, both albums have a similar sound (pop-prog-rock), and count with the production and guitars of KING CRIMSON's Robert Fripp and Tony Levin on bass, being Tony an active member of Peter's band since then. "Solsbury Hill" was the hit single of GABRIEL´s first work, both albums include classic songs that are still being played on his actual shows. In 1980 two things happened, one was the release of Peter's third album "Peter Gabriel 3", this one being the most complete work till date in the opinion of a lot of fans, and also was the foundation of WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts and Dance) where Peter and other members of WOMAD played a series of festivals around the world, where they mixed traditional and modern music. In 1982 Peter published "Security" album, with a different sound, more electronic and also it was the first time that Peter began to use African sounds in his albums. This was followed by the double live album "Peter Gabriel Plays Live". Two years after Peter released his first OST "Birdy" (Alan Parker film), which was a great mix of eerie sounds and relaxing music. Just one year after, in 1986 "So" was published, which was a well known and best selling album, with a clear pop sound and hit singles like "Sledgehammer" and "Don´t Give Up" (with the collaboration of Kate Bush on vocals) and the great "Red Rain". This album won several awards, especially for his video clips, very sophisticated for that year. Three years after, Peter published his second OST, Martin Scorcese's "Last Temptation Of Christ", one of the most experimental and innovative albums, with a mix of different musical styles. After this album a compilation "Shaking The Tree Sixteen Golden Greats" was published, and in 1988 Peter was involved in some benefit concerts, like "Human Rights Now" tour for Amnesty International, with artists like STING, Tracey CHAPMAN, Bruce SPRINGSTEEN and YOUSSOU N´DOUR. In 1992 a new album "US" was published, a very eclectic and personal album, with a wide range of different sounds and also some hit singles. Born in Blackpool and raised in St Albans Maddy Prior first came to prominence as a duo with singer/ guitarist Tim Hart, building a reputation around the folk clubs and releasing two albums. As the 70s dawned, they joined forces with Ashley Hutchings (of Fairport Convention) and Gay & Terry Woods, with the idea of fusing folk song with rock instrumentation and technique. The new group took its name from a traditional Lincolnshire ballad 'Horkstow Grange' - the tale of a character called Steeleye Span. So began an incredible story. Others may claim the invention of folk-rock, but Steeleye were the first to drag it into the electronic age. In the age of the giant rock band, Steeleye Span fitted the bill perfectly, taking folk music out of the backroom clubs and into the charts with a string of hit albums, gold discs and world tours. YES formed in 1968 with Jon ANDERSON (vocals), Chris SQUIRE (bass, vocals), Peter BANKS (guitar, vocals), Tony KAYE (keyboards), and Bill BRUFORD (drums). Well-known and influential mainstream progressive from the 1970's, and still around in some form ever since, they were highly influential in their heyday, especially notable for the really creative "Relayer". During the 1970s, YES pioneered the use of synthesizers and sound effects in modern music. Driven by Jon's artistic vision, they produced such timeless, symphonic-rock masterworks as "Roundabout," "Close To the Edge," and "Awaken". In the 1980s, YES pushed new digital sampling technologies to their limits, selling millions of records and influencing a generation of digital musicians with classics like "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" and "Rhythm Of Love". Moving through the 1990s and into the new millennium, the band keeps expanding its boundaries by using the latest hard-disk recording techniques and, most recently, working with a full orchestra to create their genre-defying music. YES gained large popularity with their brand of mysticism and grand-scale compositions. "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" are considered their best works as it's symphonic, complex, cerebral, spiritual and moving. These albums featured beautiful harmonies and strong, occasionally heavy playing. Also, "Fragile" contained the popular hit song "Roundabout". This was followed by the controversial "Tales from Topographic Oceans" LP, which was a double album consisting of only four 20-minute length suites centering on religious concepts. Also, "Relayer" was their most experimental, yet grandiose and symphonic. They broke up, until the new jewel "Going For The One" and its incredible "Awaken" was issued in 1977. In later years, YES would go through many transformations. One of the better British progressive groups, The STRAWBS were a 60's folk and medieval band turned prog-rock with the help of Dave COUSINS (the heart and soul of this group) and Rick WAKEMAN "master of the keyboards". WAKEMAN is featured on the albums "Strawbs", "Dragonfly", "Just A Collection of...", and "From The Witchwood" before he joined YES. The line-up for the group changed markedly over the years. Their sound has been in a state of constant evolution combining English folk and progressive sounds to form their unique style. Critics seem to have a preference for the STRAWBS in the early Seventies when the group consisted of Tony & John HOOPER, John FORD, Richard HUDSON and keyboard virtuoso Rick WAKEMAN. The group ceased to exist at the end of the 1970s, and COUSINS embarked on some solo projects. STRAWBS would appeal to fans of bands like FAIRPORT CONVENTION, STEELEYE SPAN, PENTANGLE, etc. They have recorded over 15 albums through the years, with various lineups around the core of Dave COUSINS who offered beautiful melodic compositions. Every STRAWBS album between "Witchwood" and "Nomadness" has something unique to offer. A perfect introduction to the sound of The STRAWBS is the compilation-CD "A Choice of Strawbs" (16 tracks). It features all their best material from their most creative and "symphonic" period (between '71 and '74). The music of The STRAWBS frequently ranges from folky (acoustic guitars) and classic (piano and harpsichord) to bombastic, symphonic rock (fiery electric guitar and glorious Mellotron in the vein of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST and The MOODY BLUES). The vocals are powerful with a lot of expression.

The pioneer of Italian Progressive groups, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI (PFM for short) is one of the leaders of the 70s prog movement. PFM developed a style which is uniquely Italian while maintaining links with the rest of the prog world. A lyrical, romantic and delicate music, full of fineness. A great melodic and instrumental richness, somptuous compositions and arrangements. Sometimes compared with the early King Crimson, the group had its own musical personality, with its elegant music.

Soft Machine fue un grupo inglés de rock progresivo, rock psicodélico y jazz fusión formado en Canterbury en 1966. Su nombre proviene de la novela de William Burroughs The Soft Machine. Son una de las principales bandas de la Escena de Canterbury, caracterizada por fusionar la psicodelia con el jazz y el rock progresivo. Soft Machine fue fundada en 1966 por el vocalista y batería Robert Wyatt, el guitarrista, bajista y vocalista Kevin Ayers, el guitarrista Daevid Allen y el teclista Mike Ratledge.

Whenever I need my fix of classic 1970s' rock, I always turn to this album. After touring as a sideman with Delaney and Bonnie, Eric Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos out of Delaney and Bonnie's rhythm section (Bobby Whitlock, keyboards and vocals; Carl Radle, bass; and Jim Gordon, drums) and The Allman Brothers' guitarist, Duane Allman, and then released the penultimate rock love song, "Layla," which takes centerstage on this iconic rock album. Inspired by his then-unrequited love for model Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend George Harrison, Clapton took the name "Layla" from Nezami Ganjavi's poem, "Layla and Majnun," which tells the story of a young man who goes crazy after falling in love with a beautiful, unavailable woman. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is undeniably one of the ten greatest rock and roll albums of all time, and with the dual guitars of Allman and Clapton, it features Clapton at his best. The album is a collection of blues standards ("Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out," "It's Too Late," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," and "Key To The Highway"), jams ("Tell the Truth"), and as the title suggests, "Other Assorted Love Songs" ("Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," "Bell Bottom Blues," "Layla"). Ironically the album was in production at the time of Jimi Hendrix's drug-overdose. (A reverent cover of "Little Wing" was included on the album in tribute to Hendrix.) In fact, the album is eerily surrounded by death and drug addiction. (Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident soonafter the album release; Gordon later murdered his mother in a psychotic rage; and Clapton was addicted to heroin.) A RARE INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM FROM THE SEVENTIES, A ONE SHOT PROJECT BY ABSOLUTE ELSEWHERE, INCLUDING BILL BRUFORD ON DRUMS. A MUST FOR ALL LOVERS OF EARLY ELECTRONIC KEYBOARDS (MOOG, MELLOTRON...) AND PROG ROCK COLLECTORS. MAGNIFICENT.

"In Search of Ancient Gods" ("Buscando a los antiguos dioses") es uno de esos discos absolutamente peculiares dentro del género progresivo, una auténtica rareza. Fue grabado por Absolute Elsewhere, o lo que es lo mismo: Paul Fishman (teclados), Bill Bruford (batería); Philip Saatchi (guitarras) y Jon Astrop (bajo), y editado por Warner en 1976. No hubo ninguna obra posterior, ni continuidad de colaboración entre el cuarteto de músicos. Fue lo que se denomina un "One Shot", un "ahí queda eso y punto". El disco pasó prácticamente inadvertido pese a que los aficionados al rock progresivo eran, en esos momentos, legión. El LP, totalmente instrumental, es, como reza el título, una experiencia en música y sonido que celebra o ilustra las teorías de Erich Von Däniken acerca del origen extraterrestre de la civilización y de las visitas de "dioses espaciales" en un pasado remoto. Durante décadas ha sido absolutamente imposible encontrar copias de este trabajo, que ha visto cómo el tiempo lo convertía en álbum de culto. En los últimos años se han efectuado muy pocas ediciones en CD (hasta la fecha circulaba algún archivo mp3 en Internet procedente de un vinilo digitalizado) y únicamente en Japón. Localizar "In Search of Ancient Gods" en archivo Flac, procedente de una de esas ediciones japonesas, es el motivo que me anima a no demorar su publicación en ThatWasMusic. Disco de colección para amantes de la música de sintetizadores, mellotrones y electrónica en general; realmente magnífico, onírico, fantasioso, relajante. No te lo pierdas por nada del mundo. Es como si la música de King Crimson y Alan Parsons se hubieran dado la mano de forma mágica e irrepetible.

NEKTAR is probably the most German-like of the Seventies British bands, a fame that owes a lot to the town in which this band was founded (Hamburg) and to their stylistic approach (Assimilated to Krautrock). NEKTAR was formed in 1969 by Allan FREEMAN (keyboards & vocals), Roye ALBRIGHTON (guitars & vocals), Derek MOORE (bass, Mellotron & vocals) and Ron HOWDEN (drums). Their earliest albums were hard rock that drew heavily from the space-rock and PINK FLOYD styles of the same period. The 70's gave them the occasion to issue some masterpieces, like for example "Remember the Future" (1973) and "Recycled" (1975). Each is a conceptual album that is a nice blend of melodic guitar and keyboards with a vocal story. "Journey To The Centre Of The Eye" is a mindblowing epic with lots of echoplex guitar and dual Mellotrons which is quite in tune with the Krautrock stuff going on around them, yet is definitely British. "Tab in the Ocean" and "Magic is a Child" had shorter songs and were less less satisfying. Fortunately there is a compilation album just called NEKTAR (1976) which has all the best bits of the albums and is highly recommended. • Text by Progarchives

IL VOLO, AN ITALIAN JEWEL

IL VOLO, UN SUPERGRUPO DE MÚSICOS DE ESTUDIO, GRABÓ ÚNICAMENTE DOS ÁLBUMES, DOS MARAVILLAS QUE NO PUEDEN FALTAR EN NINGUNA COLECCIÓN DE PROGRESIVO ITALIANO. MÁS MELÓDICOS QUE PFM, BANCO O LE ORME, PERO CON EL MISMO ESPÍRITU PRECIOSISTA Y VIRTUOSO. IMPRESCINDIBLES.

Usually described as a "supergroup", IL VOLO was a studio band formed by very popular musicians all coming from famous bands: Alberto Radius and Gabriele Lorenzi from FORMULA TRE, Mario Lavezzi from FLORA FAUNA CEMENTO and Camaleonti, Bob Callero from OSAGE TRIBE and DUELLO MADRE, Gianni Dall'Aglio from RIBELLI, along with composer Vince Tempera who also had his own band PLEASURE MACHINE. With such a pedigree it's obvious that both albums are very well played, and enjoyable but not memorable, lacking originality. An obvious similarity with FORMULA TRE is evident, along with a certain jazz-rock feel present throughout both albums, whose only distinctive element is the voice, missing on "Essere O Non Essere?" The group disbanded soon after the second release. Very good (somewhat jazz) fusion melodic symphonic with also very interesting percussion, keyboards, as nicely balanced music. The first Italian album from 1974, their music is built upon two keyboards with great vocals and lush arrangements. Close to PFM or BANCO by the vocals parts and the beauty of the themes and to E.L.P. by the instrumental virtuosity. Their second "Essere O Non Essere" is a classic item of mostly instrumental music with some theme more soft and some majesties keyboards flights a la KING CRIMSON. The story of OSIBISA starts in London in 1969, when three musicians from Ghana ( Teddy Osei on the Sax, Sol Amarfio on the drums and Mac Tontoh on the trumpet); join Spartacus R from Grenada who played the bass and complemented perfectly the African percussion, Roger Bayle from Trinidad and Tobago on the keyboards and Wendel Richardson from Antigua on the lead guitar. Very soon they found another member, Asisi Amao from Nigeria who added extra percussion plus tenor Sax. and in that moment OSIBISA was born. During the next two years they were preparing their first album but in 1970 they released their first and very successful single: "Music for Gong Gong" that caught attention from all the world. In 1971 they release the fantastic "Osibisa" with an extremely beautiful art cover by a young painter named Roger Dean. From the beginning this album broke schemes, the opener "The Dawn" starts as a tribal ceremony to receive the day with complex percussion surrounded by birds and sounds you could easily listen in central Africa, but soon the vocals and instruments prove us that they were incredibly talented to blend different influences that go from, Hendrix, Santana, Bob Marley, R&B, Jazz and all the British Psychedelia they listened and assimilated during the years they were in England, this capacity to blend styles supposedly incompatible is what took them close to Progressive Rock. The second OSIBISA album "Woyaya" was released in the same year and marked a change in their music, even when they kept the tribal sound and complex percussion they started to experiment with the organ, this album reaches their peak in the title song that closes the album an incredibly beautiful nostalgic chant "We are going, Heaven knows where we are going" surrounded by an atmospheric and psychedelic organ, extremely beautiful song. In 1972 they release their most successful album "Heads", mostly because of the legendary song "Che Che Kule", this album marked the end of their Psychedelic/Proto Prog career, but still is a great album that deserves to be listened. Their career continues with high and low points until the 21st Century but turning more and more commercial with the pass of the years, but still today they are icons in Ghana, where they've been awarded by former President Jerry J Rowling. • TEXT By PROG Archives

Este líneas en ThatWasMusic son un pequeño homenaje a John Mark y a Johnny Almond (Mark & Almond), dos músicos ingleses que comenzaron a tocar a finales de los años sesenta, y que a lo largo de los siguientes años dejaron para la posteridad una serie de inenarrables y bellísimos discos ignorados por el gran público. Compusieron música delicada, tremendamente romántica, exquisita, frágil como el cristal, cálida como el terciopelo de calidad, a caballo entre el jazz y el rock acústico; un prodigio de sensualidad natural, sin artificio, directa al corazón. "To the Heart" y "Other Peoples Rooms" (del 76 y del 78, respectivamente) son, junto a "Tuesday in New York" (1980), la cumbre de un estilo inimitable, personal, sofisticado; son discos de amor y soledad urbana, otoñales, agridulces, melancólicos, llenos de color y matices, repletos de encuentros y despedidas. Son tan memorables y contienen tanta buena música que con ellos se podría llenar una vida entera. Muchas veces lo pienso: Mark & Almond son los únicos que, en caso de incendio, harían que me olvidara de Tom Waits, de Van Morrison, de Michael Franks, de Steely Dan, de John Coltrane y de cientos más a los que idolatro y sigo desde hace décadas. Perder toda mi colección supondría un golpe durísimo, tremendo, pero no poder escuchar nunca más a Mark & Almond sería peor que una eternidad a oscuras. ¿Exagero? Tal vez..., compruébalo tú mismo. Empieza por ese viaje introspectivo que es "Other Peoples Rooms" y continúa con esa joya titulada "Directo al corazón"; escúchalos en absoluto recogimiento, con reverencia, y luego vuelve a contármelo. Acabo de regalarte algo para el resto de tus días. Descorcha una botella del mejor vino y disfruta de esta prodigiosa música de madrugada, con tu pareja. De hecho, es música perfecta para dos. Puro idilio. De nada.

Pentangle was formed in 1967 by John Renbourn and Bert Jansch two guitarists who had both already recorded as solo artists since 1965. Both musicians had recorded together 'Bert and John' in 1966 for 'Transatlantic'. Jacqui Mc Shee who joined the band on vocals had already worked with John Renbourn on his first solo record. The rhythm section was formed by Danny Thompson on double bass and Terry Cox on drums and percussion, both former sidemen of Alexis Korner in his band ALEXIS KORNER BLUES INCORPORATED.
PENTANGLE played a mixture of Jazz and Folk with Blues-elements, influences that the band integrated in their debut record 'The Pentangle' which was produced by Shel Talmy. The same year PENTANGLE released their second record 'Sweet child' a double LP consisting of live and studio tracks and containing among others two compositions by Charlie Mingus 'Haitian Fight Song' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie hat'. In 1969 they released their masterpiece 'Basket of Light' , a commercial success including the single 'Light Flight' which served as the theme song to the UK television series 'Take three girls'. PENTANGLE released three other records, 'Cruel sister' in 1970, 'Reflection' in 1971 and 'Solomon's seal' in 1972, before breaking up in 1973. While Bert Jansch and John Renbourn continued as solo artists, the latter with singer Jacqui Mc Shee in the JOHN RENBOURN BAND, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox returned to session work. The original line up reformed in 1982 for a European and Australian tour. John Renbourn left before the release of the 1985 record 'Open the door' and was replaced by Mike Piggott. For the next ten years the band continued to record with changing outfits, 'So Early in the Spring' (1988), 'Think of Tomorrow' (1991), 'One More Road' (1991) and a live record in 1994 'Pentangle Live 1994'. In 1995 Jacqui Mc Shee recorded together with Gerry Conway, Spencer Cozens and guest musicians 'About Thyne. This record was the starting point for JACQUI MC SHEE'S PENTANGLE a refreshed PENTANGLE that released 'Passe Avant' in 1989, the live record 'At the Little Theatre' in 2000 and 'Feoffee's Land' in 2005. TAI PHONG, A BAND TO DISCOVER

Taï Phong is a bit of an oddity, as it is a French band founded by Vietnamese brothers Kahn and Taï Ho Tong. The sound is comparable to Camel, and Novalis, but the most telling description is "France's answer to Barclay James Havest."

The first incarnation came together in 1972, and included an American and a German (keep telling yourself this is a French band). They were in the process of recording, when contract disputes broke out. Because the brothers refused the terms (thus leaving them without a deal), the other two members left. Soon after, they would be replaced by keyboardist Jean Alain Gardet, and the now famous Jean-Jacques Goldman. In 1973, they again entered the studio. However, more artistic disputes, and contract haggling, with recording executives would keep them from releasing anything for the next couple of years. By 1974, they had a contract they could live with, but still needed a drummer. They chose 17 year-old Stéphan Caussarieu. The classic lineup of Taï Phong was now complete, and would remain intact for the first two albums. This was also a potent combination of talent and ego. After the release of 1976's "Windows," some of the members branched out. Jean-Jacques dabbled in some solo work, and Gardet recorded an album with Alpha Ralpha. It is during this period that trouble started brewing. "Windows" did not sell very well, and the band spent all the money from the first album on a new sound system. Goldman did not wish to perform live, which was a serious problem considering his contribution to the band's sound. This disheartened Jean Alain, causing him to exit. The band went on tour in 1977 with bassist Michael Jones also taking over lead vocal, but it just wasn't working. They decided to cancel any remaining shows, and just concentrate on studio work. This is the moment when brother Taï left. After much turmoil, they released 1979's "Last Flight," but the magic was gone. By 1980 interest in the band was waning, and they were in yet another contract dispute. Rather than push ahead with a fourth album, the band broke up. Over the years the interest in Taï Phong's music went up and down. This is largely due to the song "Sister Jane" resurfacing in one form or another. In 1993, reissues of the albums breathed new life into the story. Some of the guys got together, and the obvious talk of reunion came around. The main conspirators were Kahn and Stephan. In 1995 they began work on new material, and shopped it around. Goldman was not interested in rejoining the band, so they found Herve Acosta to fill the lead vocal spot. Angelo Zurzulo had been a replacement keyboardist in the old days, and he was also tapped for the new project. It took a while, but the result was 2000's Sun. • Text by Prog Archives

After the demise of COLOSSEUM in '71, keyboardplayer Dave Greenslade founded his own band GREENSLADE, featuring Tony Reeves (bass), Dave Lawson (keyboards, clarinet, flute) and Andrew McCulloch (drums), he had left KING CRIMSON. In '73, GREENSLADE released their eponymous debut album, followed by "Bedside Manner Are Extra" ('73), "Spyless Guest" ('74) and finally "Time and Tide" ('75). Then the band call it a day and Dave Greenslade went solo. The album "Shades of Green" ('97) is a comprehensive compilation-CD and "Live" ('99) a live-CD including recordings from '73 and '75. A few years ago Dave Greenslade and Tony Reeves teamed up to re-unite GREENSLADE with John Young (guitar and vocals) and Chris Cozens (drums). They released the albums "Large Afternoon" and "Greenslade live 2001" (same line-up except John Troter on drums). ••• The first two albums are an excellent blend of classic, jazz, rock, blues and symphonic rock with elaborate compositions and inventive and exciting dual-keyboardplay by Greenslade and Lawson. The omnipresence of the Mellotron is very pleasant with majestic waves of the violin-Mellotron (like early KING CRIMSON) and glorious eruptions of the sumptuous choir-Mellotron. In comparison with the 'progrock-dinosaurs', GREENSLADE played more varied styles, the songs were shorter and it lacked the usual 'progrock self-indulgence' (like ELP and YES), no endless soloing. I'm very pleased with the swinging and powerful sound of the clavinet, an underestimated keyboard within the progrock world (only Rick WAKEMAN was a frequent user). A good start to this unique band is the compilation "Shades of Green" and an even better introduction is the live-album "Live" (with tracks from '73 and '75), containing some spectacular play on the Minimoog (with pitchbend). It's the most keyboard-loaden album with hints from WAKEMAN, MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND and SUPERTRAMP. GREENSLADE is a band to discover and they deserve more appreciation by the progrock aficionados. • Text by Prog Archives

STACKRIDGE, THE BEST OF ENGLAND

TRAS CUARENTA AÑOS GRABANDO DISCOS EXCEPCIONALES, DESDE LA PRIMERA HASTA LA ÚLTIMA NOTA, STACKRIDGE SIGUEN SIENDO UNOS PERFECTOS DESCONOCIDOS PARA EL GRAN PÚBLICO, UN GRUPO DE CULTO DEL QUE ES IMPOSIBLE NO QUEDAR PRENDADO.

Todos los artistas o grupos de este mundo, y poco importa su estilo musical, su atmósfera o su procedencia, tienen imitadores, continuadores de su sonido, o se parecen a otros, o toman prestados logros e ideas de otros, etcétera. Precisamente por eso, cuando alguien quiere explicar rápidamente a un amigo cómo suena, por ejemplo, Starcastle, es normal que termine resolviéndolo por la vía fácil: "son como unos Yes a la americana, bastante buenos". Y punto. Y así con todo. Pero no con Stackridge. Con Stackridge rompieron el molde. De ahí que sea tan difícil explicar qué música componen y tocan y cómo suenan. Voy a intentarlo, y no tengo otro método que tirar de comparaciones. Aunque aviso por adelantado que ellos no tienen nada que ver con ningún artista que yo pueda citar, pues son únicos y formidablemente buenos. Tan buenos que cuesta creer que algo tan bueno no haya triunfado a gran escala. Vamos allá. Stackridge son británicos, y eso marca sus voces y su carácter. Voces británicas, perfectas, amantes de la armonía y de la melodía. Digamos que sus voces son tan buenas como las de los Beatles cuando se ponían sublimes. Stackridge tiene una faceta pop muy marcada. En eso son también como los de Liverpool, pero juro que sus composiciones no tienen nada (NADA) que envidiar a las mejores de Lennon/McCartney, a los que reconocen adorar abiertamente. Punto. Stackridge son también un grupo de rock progresivo (sí, has leído bien), que en ocasiones te recordará a Gentle Giant y en otras al sonido Canterbury de Caravan o Hatfield & the North (piensa en la voz de Richard Sinclair). Stackridge también son un grupo de folk rock; marcadamente acústicos, tradicionales, psicodélicos o medievales. Todo depende del tema y del día. Stackridge son también jazzísticos. También están en deuda con la música clásica (Frederick Delius, Stravinsky), y eso se nota en sus arreglos, en la delicadeza de sus adornos. Stackridge son también amantes de la música de music hall o cabaret, de la broma sonora, de la salida ingeniosa, de la melodía añeja, del ritmo antiguo. Añadamos, por tanto, un toque impredecible a lo Monty Python. Para terminar, baste decir que son instrumentistas extraordinarios. Cuando construyen una pieza instrumental logran dejar a todo el mundo boquiabierto. Ah, sí: las letras son deliciosas, divertidas, llenas de ingenio. Les gusta contar historias. Y lo hacen de maravilla. Termino. Ya termino. Queda la atmósfera: son vitales, optimistas, frescos, románticos, épicos. Buen humor garantizado de principio a fin. Ni una sola de sus canciones, ni una sola, es inferior al resto. Así que debes escucharlos. Y luego, cuando lo hayas hecho, vuelve y contesta a mi maldita pregunta: ¿cómo es posible que el mundo no sepa de la existencia de algo así? Los caminos de Dios son inexcrutables. Seguramente los reservó en vistas a amenizar las largas y perezosas tardes en el paraíso. No te los pierdas, sería el mayor error de tu vida. Empieza, si no sabes por dónde, con "Friendliness". Y compra sus discos. El grupo sigue en activo y se merece todo el apoyo y el afecto del público.

BRIEFLY AND IN CAPITAL LETTERS: MAGNA CARTA WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ACOUSTIC BAND OF THE SEVENTIES. PERIOD.

Los álbumes grabados por Magna Carta durante la década de los setenta merecen estar en la vitrina de los grandes tesoros. Ningún otro grupo acústico puede hacerles la más mínima sombra, pues ellos son la máxima referencia del género. Delicados y exquisitos, sus discos son compañeros de por vida. En ese extraño viaje, se puede prescindir de muchas cosas, pero jamás de Magna Carta.

MAGNA CARTA is an English 'folk' band, formed in 1969 in London by Chris Simpson, Lyell Tranter, and Glen Stuart. They were part of the early progressive wave, but without really fully stepping into the progressive realm. Magna Carta's music is largely inspired and influenced by the folk of Simon & Garfunkel, focussing on soft and gentle acoustic music, often with a traditional feel, augmented with orchestral arangements and good vocal harmonies. Influences and similar artist include the already mentioned Simon & garfunkel, Fairport Convention, Kevin Ayers, Moody Blues, Amazing Blondel, Caravan, Al Stewart, the softer folk/singer songwriter genre and Canterbury genre. ••• MAGNA CARTA has gone through numerous personel changes over the years, with the only constant factor being Chris Simpson. Most notable members include Glen Stuart, an amazing vocalist with a great range, Lyell Tranter, who soon departed for Australia to be replaced by Davey johnstone on guitars (left Magna Carta to join Elton John as long time band member), and Linda Taylor who would later merry Chris Simpson. ••• Between 1969 and 1975 MAGNA CARTA made some wonderfull albums, with the beautifull "Seasons' and 'Lord Of The Ages' as absolute highlights. Also the live album "In Concert" recorded in 1971 in Amsterdam is not to be missed. With the leaving of Glen Stuart the magical beauty was lost, and for a while the band seemed to fall apart. Chris Simpson however managed to keep the band alive and MAGNA CARTA continoud making nice highly enjoyable music. ••• In 1983 Chris met Linda Taylor and they continued mostly as a duo keeping the MAGNA CARTA name alive. Hasta la fecha, en ninguna de las votaciones propuestas por ThatWasMusic en su sección "War of the classics", se había producido un fenómeno semejante. Normalmente, los votos quedan muy repartidos. Pete Dello was the original leader of the Honeybus, a short-lived but wonderful English baroque-pop group who only managed to release one album in 1970 (finally reissued in 2008). For all the gems available on compilations like "Honeybus At Their Best" and "She Flies Like A Bird: The Anthology", fans of their brand of summery, rootsy pop couldn’t be truly satisfied without an ear on Dello’s fine solo efforts.

Comparisons to the Beatles are somewhat unavoidable, from the next-level songwriting to the double-tracked voice, chamber orchestra production, but assertions of cheap imitation are unacceptable. Dello’s album is a pretty mix, most songs led with a clean acoustic guitar or piano, flavoring the sound with modest string and brass sections. This is where the record gets its baroque tag, but at times the music, like Honeybus, approaches a country-folk-rock sound. Tracks like I’m A Gambler illustrate that perfect mix of rural rock and sunshine pop, blessed with some especially tasteful percussion. The trick to the record’s charm may be the Nilsson inspired vocal treatments, either Dello’s unassuming lead or the lilting vocal turns and harmony parts.

I wouldn’t call it a perfect record, but it gets pretty close and grows to be very solid. Pete scored with his first Honeybus single, I Can’t Let Maggie Go, and gets a chance at a full showcase with Into Your Ears. Only a couple tracks push the British camp too much for my ears, so take note if you’re fond of skipping sillier tracks. If you’re looking for gems, you’ll be right on target.

Extraordinarios arreglos vocales, preeminencia acústica, tremendamente originales, poéticos, épicos y difíciles de clasificar. Mucho más que un simple cruce entre Beatles, Pink Floyd y Moody Blues. Kaleidoscope / Fairfield Parlour biography
The English band KALEIDOSCOPE (not to be confused with American band KALEIDOSCOPE which existed at the same time and played basically psychedelic rock too) is an almost forgotten band from the late sixties and early seventies. The band started its recording activities in 1967 as KALEIDOSCOPE, but the band was formed back in 1963 with the name THE SIDEKICKS and changed to THE KEY later. In the beginning, the line-up was Eddie Pumer on guitar, Steve Clark on bass and Danny Bridgman on drums, but they later needed a new vocalist and Peter Daltrey joined (he played keyboards too). They played local venues and released singles, but when they signed a contract with Phillips, they changed the name of the band and started playing their own psychedelic rock compositions instead of the covers they used to play before. The combination of Pumer's musical arrangements and Daltrey's lyrics was the main power of the group.In 1967 was released their first album, 'Tangerine Dream'. The album comprises fine psychedelic songs with experimentations and arrangements like many of the top psychedelic and early progressive bands from that age (THE BEATLES, PINK FLOYD, THE MOODY BLUES). They got lots of airplay and recorded many BBC sessions, but didn´t sell well. They eventually released more singles, like 'Jenny Artichoke', which was a success, but sold poorly, and another album, 'Faintly Blowing'. It was released in 1969, showing a progression of it's predecessor in terms of sound. Although still psychedelic, the compositions were getting more progressive. The album unfortunately failed to chart.They released a final single, 'Balloon', before changing the name to FAIRFIELD PARLOUR and becoming totally progressive oriented. The band didn't achieve success (Fantastic first album: "FROM HOME TO HOME") and they were unlucky at the time, failing to chart and having problems (including some sabotage) in all great gigs they had, including the famous Isle of Wight, which they were the responsibles for the 'Theme Song' of the festival (released under the name of I LUV WIGHT). "WHITE FACED LADY" was their last album, recorded in 1971 partly with the help of Mike Pinder, from THE MOODY BLUES. The album was a conceptual double-album with many orchestral arrangements. The band had a deal with Vertigo at that time, but the responsible quit Vertigo and moved to CBS. So they were to release it on CBS, but CBS refused to release their album and it stayed shelved for twenty years, being released in 1991 by a label they created just to release the album, Kaleidoscope Records, under the name of KALEIDOSCOPE, although recorded under the FAIRFIELD PARLOUR encarnation of the band. The band split in 1972 due to the lack of results and luck (they were offered less than 20 dollars to play the last gigs). So this was the end of this great psychedelic and progressive rock band which had talent to be one of the major progressive rock acts of their age but died prematurely due to bad luck in the crucial moments. Lazarus were a soft rock trio, originally known as Shiloh, who were one of the early signings to the Bearsville label -- and like a lot of that company's early signings, their music came and went without much notice from the public, despite their having the attention of Peter Yarrow as the producer of their two LPs. Legend has it (as also referenced in the notes to their debut LP) that they approached Yarrow backstage following a 1969 Peter, Paul and Mary concert. In short order, they were renamed Lazarus and cutting an album under the auspices of Yarrow and Peter, Paul and Mary producer Phil Ramone, and were signed to Bearsville, a record company newly organized by PPM manager Albert Grossman. • They were, in fact, Christian rockers, which was something relatively new in those days -- the back-to-Jesus movement, as an offshoot of the counterculture, had just gotten rolling a couple of years earlier. The members were Bill (Billie) Hughes on guitar, violin, and backing vocals; Carl Keesee on bass and vocals; and Gary Dye on keyboards and vocals. Their sound was basically acoustic rock with minimal amplification and lots of harmony vocals -- think of Crosby, Stills & Nash or a low-wattage answer to the Doobie Brothers from the time of their second or third album. And in a way, it's ironic that Peter Yarrow, of the PPM lineup, ended up producing them, as Noel "Paul" Stookey was the trio's most overtly religious practitioner (and a devout born-again Christian as well), and ended up performing Bill Hughes' "Blessed," a song off of Lazarus' self-titled debut album, at his Carnegie Hall concert, released by Warner Bros. as One Night Stand. • In any case, neither of Lazarus' two albums sold in any serious numbers, but the group was still working in the mid-'70s. One report has them doing a Life Savers jingle during this period. Hughes, who passed away in Los Angeles in 1998, went solo in 1978, cutting his first album for Epic that year. He also worked with Keesee in Canada, cutting records into the early '90s. Keesee played a lot of sessions, including recordings with Jane Siberry, and -- with Hughes -- recorded with David Bradstreet. The second Lazarus album, Fool's Paradise, was released by Pony Canyon in Japan on CD, but otherwise the group's main exposure in recent decades was the 2000 reissue of "Ladyfriends 2" from their second album on Bearsville Anthology. • Text by BRUCE EDER - ALL MUSIC

AMAZING BLONDEL existed throughout the early seventies. Originally formed by John David GLADWIN, Terry WINCOTT and Eddie BAIRD after leaving another even more obscure band called METHUSELAH. For these three, the band was essentially a three piece singing and playing krumhorns, recorders, lute, theorbo, guitars, dulcimers, flute, piano, harpsichord, mellotron, organ, tabor, cittern tubular, bells, glockenspiel and percussion. English mostly acoustic 1969-76. Middle-age renaissance guitar, organ and other instruments, multipart harmony vocals, etc., bordering on the prog movement in England at the time. The musicians had earlier played rock and thus the music cannot be termed classical either. Among lots of famous guest musicians can be named Boz Burrell, Eddie Jobson, Steve Winwood and Mel Collins.
"The Amazing Bondel" was a collection of soft acoustic rock numbers that included one medieval-styled song that seemed to go over better than anything else, and that was the direction they aimed for in their future releases. "Evensong" is a folk album that harked back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Madrigals and ballads performed on period instruments became their specialty and the trio's creative ideas led to the concept album "Fantasia Lindum", which belongs more to progressive-rock than to folk-rock. "England" used the same technique to craft elegant, lushly-arranged pop songs. GLADWIN left and the surviving duo veered towards STEELEYE SPAN's hard-folk with "Blondel", entirely composed by BAIRD, "Mulgrave Street", "Inspiration", "Bad Dreams". The band reunited 21 years later for "Restoration" (1997), an album which harkens back to their halcon days.
Their third and fourth albums "Fantasia Lindum" and "England" represent the most musically sophisticated of the material, which any progressive fan without an aversion to folk music should have no trouble enjoying. Most fans of early GRYPHON, JETHRO TULL, FAIRPORT, and other British folk rock will be delighted with this band. • TEXT by PROG ARCHIVES

THE QUEST FOR THE BEST BASS GUITAR OF ROCK HAS A WINNER, CLAP YOUR HANDS TO MR. JOHN ENTWISTLE

Pocas sorpresas, por no decir ninguna, ha deparado la votación de los amigos y visitantes de ThatWasMusic a la hora de elegir al mejor bajista del rock de todos los tiempos. El gran John Entwistle –considerado en otras encuestas como el "bajista del Milenio"– se ha alzado con el galardón, no sin competir enconadamente a lo largo de todo un mes con Jack Bruce, Jaco Pastorius, Chris Squire y John Paul Jones; todos ellos seguidos de cerca por Stanley Clarke, Tony Levin y Roger Waters. Se diría que el resto de músicos que integraban la lista parecían haber sido borrados del mapa, como por arte de ensalmo. Tal ha sido la concentración de votos. Tras la elección de Jimi Hendrix como mejor guitarra del rock, hace un mes, el grupo de super estrellas se va completando poco a poco. Ya tenemos al gran bajista de The Who, apodado "The Ox", al bajo. Habrá que ver quién se sienta a la batería y a los teclados, en próximas encuestas. Y quién se atreve a ponerse al frente de todos ellos y... cantar.

UN MARAVILLOSO GRUPO DE FOLK PROGRESIVO, A MEDIO CAMINO DE LAS BELLÍSIMAS ARMONÍAS VOCALES DE AMAZING BLONDEL Y LA CONCEPCIÓN VANGUARDISTA DE GENTLE GIANT. "RED QUEEN TO GRYPHON THREE" ES UNA JOYA IMPRESCINDIBLE EN CUALQUIER COLECCIÓN.

GRYPHON was founded in 1973 by Richard HARVEY (recorder, keys) and Brian GULLAND (bassoon, krumhorn) after a stint at the Royal Acadamy of Music. They shared a vision of blending traditional English folk, Baroque instrumentation and Renaissance music in a modern format. The compositions resemble those of Gentle Giant but give greater emphasis to the authentic textures and sounds of the Renaissance period. Harvey and Gulland were joined in 1973 by Graeme TAYLOR on guitar and singer/percussionist David OBERLE for their all-acoustic first album 'Gryphon'. Bassist Philip NESTOR was added to the line up in 1974 for their second effort 'Midnight Mushrumps', which featured an increased number of original compositions and leanings in a rock direction. Later that year their classic 'Red Queen to Gryphon Three' was released and has become a prog rock staple with its longer, somewhat more symphonic arrangements and courtly instrumental rock. The mid-1970s brought big changes to the band with new bass player Malcom BENNET taking over for Nestor. In 1977, guitarist Graeme Taylor left to be replaced by Bob FOSTER, bassist Jonathan DAVIE replaced Bennett, and Oberle switched to lead voice with Alex BAIRED taking over on drums. Tim SEBASTIAN was also brought in as a lyricist to complete the ever-growing unit. 'Raindance' was released in 1975 and 'Treason' in '77, establishing GRYPHON as a top-notch prog rock act. With a seamless fusion of British folk and medieval rock, GRYPHON developed a strong sound all their own and a loyal following.

ALL THOSE CONCEPT ALBUMS

THE "CONCEPT ALBUM FEVER" WAS THE MOST CURIOUS AND CREATIVE TENDENCY OF ROCK MUSIC THROUGHOUT THE SEVENTIES...

Si alguna enfermedad, fiebre o locura, afectó por igual a todos los artistas y grandes grupos desde finales de los sesenta hasta la segunda mitad de la década de los setenta, ésa fue, sin duda alguna, la tendencia obsesivo compulsiva por los llamados "Concept Albums", discos creados alrededor de un eje o nexo temático. Se grabaron a patadas, hasta la saciedad, de todos los gustos, tamaños y colores. Y el gran público los recibía fascinado. Esa etiqueta bastaba para que los aficionados abrieran la boca con desmesura y enarcaran las cejas en señal de asombro y reverencia. Artistas como The Beatles, Alan Parsons, The Kinks, Alice Cooper, Kate Bush, Camel, ELO, Gentle Giant, Elton John, Moody Blues, Mike Oldfield, y una interminable lista (consultar enlace al pie de estas líneas) de infectados, pusieron todo su empeño en no ser menos que nadie y no quedar fuera de la moda. Se diría que si uno no grababa un "álbum conceptual" no contaba. A las obras de carácter instrumental ("Tubular Bells", "The Snow Goose", "The Six Wives of Henry VIII"), se unían ambiciosos proyectos generacionales ("Tommy" y "Quadrophenia" de The Who); excesos paranoides ("The Wall" de Pink Floyd); viajes surrealistas ("The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" de Genesis); rituales místicos y metafísicos ("Tales from Topographic Oceans" de Yes); óperas teatrales ("Thick as a Brick" y "A Passion Play" de Jethro Tull) o extravagancias galácticas ("The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" de David Bowie). A favor de toda esa corriente, y también como forma de explicar el fenómeno, se podría alegar que el afán por la creatividad, el talento compositivo, y el virtuosismo, eran moneda común en esa época. Existía, además, un factor intelectual, un ánimo revulsivo, una postura generacional, que acompañaba al arte y lo nutría. Dicho de forma simple: aún quedaban cosas por decir. En la actualidad, nadie, o casi nadie, tendría arrestos ni capacidad para enfrentarse a retos de esa índole, en forma de doble álbum. Tanto mejor. Dios nos libre de que cualquier imbécil de la MTV se sienta sublime de golpe al descubrir que su coeficiente intelectual casi iguala al de los monos. Carcajada de ThatWasMusic. Volviendo a los "Concept álbums", y para terminar, resta confesar, y eso es algo que cada uno se debe responder, qué relación mantenemos con ellos a día de hoy, más de treinta años después de su edición. Personalmente los contemplo con afecto. Ahí están, ocupando un puesto de honor en mi colección, aunque no sea capaz de escucharlos más que de tarde en tarde, y, rara vez, enteros. Algunos no han resistido el paso de los años, a pesar de ser modélicos... ¿quién se sienta ahora mismo y se traga "Journey to the Center of the Earth" de Rick Wakeman de un tirón? ¡Glubbbs!

"Olias of Sunhillow", el primer disco en solitario de Jon Anderson, líder y voz de Yes, apareció en 1976. Tras el extenso tour que siguió a la edición de "Relayer", y con la banda en el cenit de su carrera, se imponía un descanso. Gozaban de una reputación extraordinaria, despertaban pasiones y copaban anualmente los primeros puestos en todas las categorías. Cada año, Melody Maker los aupaba al podio: "Mejor voz, Jon Anderson"; "Mejor guitarrista, Steve Howe", Mejor bajista: "Chris Squire", "Mejor compositor: "Anderson/Howe"; amén de mejor álbum, mejor teclista, arreglos, etcétera. Y es que en los setenta, al menos entre el 72 y el 77, y coincidiendo con el máximo apogeo del rock progresivo, Yes reinaron casi en solitario, superando en popularidad y éxito a King Crimson o a Genesis. Incluso Anderson y Howe llegaron a bromear sobre el tema. En una entrevista, hecha durante la grabación de "Tales", un periodista español les preguntó cuál era la diferencia entre ellos y Genesis. Se rieron y contestaron: "Bueno, ellos son un poco más, eh..., rústicos". La afirmación se entiende si se piensa en que un halo místico envolvía a Yes en aquellos días. Sus letras, a caballo entre lo críptico y lo poético, cósmicas, épicas; las portadas oníricas de sus discos; los universos que Roger Dean creaba para sus giras; su espectacular música –realmente muy adelantada a su tiempo, incluso en ocasiones incomprendida, como en el caso de "Tales From Topographic Oceans"–; sus declaraciones y su estilo de vida, les convertían en un punto y aparte. Yes era Yes. Y el resto, el resto. Cuando apareció "Olias of Sunhillow", el álbum fue considerado la quintaesencia del "universo Yes" y la crítica se deshizo en halagos. Anderson había grabado el disco en la soledad de su estudio, como un alquimista en su laboratorio, experimentando, viéndoselas con todos los instrumentos, exprimiendo la todavía exigua tecnología de la época al máximo. El resultado: un álbum conceptual que podría ser la banda sonora perfecta del universo lisérgico creado por James Cameron en Avatar –universo que está en deuda evidente con los mundos orgánicos y las islas flotantes creadas por Roger Dean–; un puñado de canciones telúricas y ritmos tribales, compuestos para dibujar un planeta agónico llamado Sunhillow, cuya raza deberá partir guiada por Olias en la Moorglade Mover, en un éxodo hacia el sol central. "Olias of Sunhillow" es un álbum que ha resistido excepcionalmente bien el paso de los años. Un trabajo en el que el todo, el conjunto, es más importante que las partes que lo integran. Posee momentos de inefable belleza. Es luminoso y mágico, hipnótico, metafísico. Y es comúnmente reconocido como el mejor trabajo de toda la carrera de Jon Anderson. No dudes en comprarlo. Es un disco memorable.

Mirando hacia atrás, admitiré por vez primera en mi vida que le debo algo al punk, al tecnopop, a los new romantics y a todos los cretinos que poblaron el panorama musical de finales de los setenta. Esos mediocres me hicieron un gran favor; un favor inmenso: me regalaron Tiempo. Me explicaré. Cuando la Gran Música –ya sea rock, rock progresivo, folk rock, psicodelia, jazz rock, blues, rhythm & blues, o cualquier género de calidad hecho entre los sesenta y los setenta– entró en declive a raiz de la llegada de Juanito el Podrido y sus hordas de tarugos con piercing, la industria apostó por la vanalidad más absoluta en aras de la "modernidad". Durante años nos machacaron con grupos horrososos; hordas de drogados berreadores cargados de cadenas, y locas con teclado, gomina, abanico y rimmel. Es un hecho históricamente comprobable que buena parte de la Gran Música quedó estigmatizada. Decir en voz alta, en los ochenta, que "Selling England by the Pound" o "Made in Japan" o "Houses of the Holy" eran obras maestras conllevaba que todo el mundo te mirara con absoluta perplejidad y desprecio. Algún día llegaremos todos a la conclusión de que la década de los ochenta fue (salvo honrosas y muy dignas excepciones) realmente nefasta a nivel musical. Ante la falta de discos memorables, yo, como coleccionista, me dediqué a investigar en el pasado, a escuchar cosas que se me habían escapado. Así fue como descubrí, casi diez años después de su edición, la existencia de "Laid Back" (1973), primer álbum en solitario de Gregg Allman. Hasta la fecha no me había perdido ninguna grabación de los Allman Brothers; tampoco las dos antologías de Duane Allman y otras colaboraciones hechas por el excepcional y malogrado guitarrista..., pero, mierda, no había reparado en el trabajo de su hermano Gregg en solitario. Cuando cayó este álbum en mis manos me tiré de los pelos: ¡Casi diez años perdidos, sin reparar en esta joya, que contiene algunas de las canciones de amor más bellas y espectaculares que he escuchado en toda mi vida! Gracias al cielo, desde ese día –creo que fue en el verano de 1981– jamás he viajado sin "Laid Back". Lo grabé en cassette, y alimentó mi walkman Sony durante años; animó viajes; solucionó regalos. Recurro a él desde entonces, cada vez que el cerebro y el corazón me piden algo pasional, auténtico y eterno. Rhythm & Blues inmenso, insuperable, con un poderoso toque "Blue Eyed Soul" –soul de ojos azules–, romántico y sofisticado, y un redentor y feliz grito de gospel capaz de hacer bailar a los muertos. Tras este disco, en 1974, Gregg emprendió una gira promocional de "Laid Back", al margen de los Allman, cuyo fantástico documento sonoro es "The Gregg Allman Tour", obra maestra en la que el cantante, teclista, guitarrista y compositor, es acompañado por una orquesta de 24 músicos, y que se editó en formato de doble álbum. Puedo asegurar que de haber sido músico, y no escritor, hubiera dado cualquier cosa por componer alguna de las monumentales canciones que estos dos trabajos encierran. No lo dudéis, estas dos grabaciones son un deber para todo aquel que quiera morirse en paz, sabiendo que se lleva lo esencial de este mundo. Por todo eso, muchas gracias a Juanito el Podrido; gracias por llenar el mundo de mierda sonora y darme la oportunidad de entretenerme buscando perlas como éstas.

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils –tradúzcase como Los Temerarios del Monte Ozark– son una banda de country rock formada en Springfield, Missouri, en 1972. Pero que nadie se lleve a engaño, no son la típica banda de country que a base de arpa de boca, banjo y violín anima veladas de whisky y bailes a la usanza de los que se montaban los pioneros del Far West en las largas y gélidas noches de viaje. En absoluto. Su sonido es una exquisita mezcla de country, rock y pop, tan perfectamente equilibrada, tan sutil, tan armoniosa y delicada, y tan sofisticada a un tiempo, que ha llevado a muchos críticos a considerarles nada más y nada menos que los Steely Dan del country. Es cierto. Sus discos son de una belleza aplastante. Cuando los Ozark Mountain se proponen componer una balada, un tema intimista, plácido, evocativo –y sus discos están llenos de ellas–, dejan muy atrás las mejores marcas obtenidas por bandas como The Eagles, America, Poco o Jackson Browne. Una afirmación de este calibre puede parecer gratuita, pura exageración, pero no lo es. Su juego vocal provoca asombro, es perfecto; su destreza y finura instrumental es de sacarse el sombrero; su talento como arreglistas, sencillamente portentoso. Poseen una abultada discografía, que llega prácticamente hasta la actualidad. A día de hoy, los Ozark Mountain Daredevils viven semi retirados. Varias veces al año se reunen, dan algún concierto que atrae a gente desde las cuatro esquinas de Estados Unidos, graban algún disco, y viven de la aureola mágica que han creado a lo largo de más de treinta años de actividad. No son en absoluto conocidos por el gran público, al menos no lo son más allá de los círculos de aficionados al country y a la buena música americana. Y es una pena. Confieso que de todas las bandas y artistas que he conocido a lo largo de cuarenta años dedicado plenamente a coleccionar discos, los Ozark están en el Top Ten de mis preferencias. Acompañan a estas líneas sus cuatro primeros álbumes. Que nadie se pierda la oportunidad de descubrir esta maravilla de maravillas. Vuestra deuda con ThatWasMusic será eterna. Lo sé.

JETHRO TULL, LIFE´S A LONG SONG

LADIES & GENTLEMEN, HATS OFF! PLEASE, CLAP YOUR HANDS TO MR. IAN ANDERSON AND THE MAGNIFICENT JETHRO TULL

Recuerdo como si fuera ayer la extraordinaria sensación que supuso tener "Living in the Past" en mis manos, en 1972, una tarde en la que una amiga del curso de COU, de la que después nada más supe, me prestó ese célebre doble álbum recopilatorio de Jethro Tull, que reunía material en directo junto a singles, caras B y piezas procedentes de la primera época del grupo, aquélla más asentada en el rhythm & Blues y el folk rock que en los conceptos progresivos al uso. Imma, así se llamaba mi benefactora, lo había comprado en Andorra. Las tapas eran gruesas, de cartón, con lomo y textura que imitaba las estrías de la piel añeja. Sin duda uno de los mejores envoltorios que jamás haya tenido un disco. Creo que esa fue la primera vez en mi vida en que la atracción por un LP superaba mi interés por una mujer. De hecho, salí corriendo en dirección a casa, cruzando la ciudad como una exhalación, sin entretenerme ni en los besos. Aquella noche, en mi primer tocadiscos monoaural –un trotado Cosmos en forma de maletín cuya tapa era al tiempo el altavoz– quedé atrapado en los surcos de esta joya, y, lo que es aún más significativo, quedé irremisiblemente atrapado para siempre en el pasado. Al menos en lo musical. Y me alegro de esa "condena", pues ante la mediocridad musical del presente no me cuesta imaginar lo abominable que llegará a ser el futuro. Como dice el tema clásico de los Tull, la vida es una larga canción. Y desde ese lejano día al que me he referido, la música de Ian Anderson ha sido la mejor amiga y compañera de viaje. La copia de Imma acabó siendo protagonista de infinitas tardes de cubatas y amigos. Todos estábamos fascinados por el look de los Tull, que nada tenía que ver con el arquetipo de rock star al uso. Ian Anderson era la encarnación del perfecto beggar inglés o del clochard francés; andrajoso y zarrapastroso a más no poder; un storyteller extraordinario, capaz de encerrar las vivencias de toda una vida en un tema de menos de tres minutos. Con el paso de los años, muchos de los discos de la abultada discografía de este grupo decisivo e irrepetible se convirtieron en clásicos de mi discoteca, pero confieso que rara vez, cuando la ansiedad Tull se despierta –cosa que ocurre con relativa frecuencia–, recurro a títulos como "A Passion Play" o "Thick As a Brick", platos demasiado contundentes, que requieren de tiempo y tranquilidad para ser paladeados. Termino siempre con "Aqualung" o con "Living in the Past" entre las manos. O con alguno de sus discos intermedios: "Minstrel in the Gallery", "Songs from the Woods" o "War Child". Mirando hacia atrás, con carácter retrospectivo, todos coincidiremos en que la aportación de Ian Anderson al Gran Concierto del Rock no tiene precio. Más de treinta álbumes oficiales, más de 60 millones de copias vendidas en todo el mundo, más de 2.500 conciertos a sus espaldas en más de 40 países confirman que Eso Era Música. ThatWasMusic. Y afortunadamente, lo sigue siendo. Por muchos años. God Save Jethro Tull. Y a la reina, alpiste.

GEORGE HARRISON, ETERNAL

BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A MATERIAL WORLD, YOU SHOULD LISTEN THIS ALBUM AGAIN AND AGAIN

Antes de escribir estas líneas he estado pensando un buen rato qué decir de "All things Must Pass". Para mí no es fácil hacerlo. Esta maravilla firmada por George Harrison, el Beatle místico, es algo más que un disco emblemático; más que una obra de arte; más que el mejor de los álbumes de la era post Beatle, junto al "Imagine" de John Lennon; más que el hito de haber sido el primer triple LP grabado en la historia del rock por un artista; más, en definitiva, que un disco de culto; más que una grabación absolutamente inmortal, bella e insuperable; más..., ¿qué más?. Lo diré a tumba abierta: "All things Must Pass" formó parte de la banda sonora de la primera juventud de quien esto escribe. Y eso marca de por vida, no se puede olvidar. A los catorce años yo echaba monedas en una máquina de discos, en un bar perdido, en un pueblo perdido en mitad de Aragón, en un verano libre e interminable. Sonaba "My Sweet Lord". Y también "What is Life" y "Apple Scruffs". Afortunadamente, no era yo el único dispuesto a alimentar a aquel mostruo insaciable. Recuerdo que todos nos quedábamos sin monedas a diario, sin poder comprar tabaco. Todo por seguir escuchando a Harrison, una y otra vez. De vez en cuando, para variar, apretábamos otras teclas y optábamos por darle una oportunidad a Ringo y su genial "It´t Don´t Come Easy", o a Paul, con su delicioso "Another Day"; también, en menor medida, a Paul Simon, a Paul Revere y los Raiders, a los Creedence, o, ya de noche, cuando aparecía alguna chica de las que encandila, a Roberta Flack, que nos mataba suavemente y nos dejaba suspirando. No obstante, Harrison reinó en solitario en aquel particular Summer of Love.
Hoy, muchos años después, cuando escucho cualquiera de las canciones de "All Things Must Pass", se me hace un nudo en la garganta y entro en estado afásico, incapaz de articular una sola palabra. Sólo puedo escuchar, en silencio, con auténtica devoción, convencido de que THAT WAS MUSIC. ¿Lo entendéis? Sí. Eso era música. Música inmensa, perfecta, bellísima, inspirada, inagotable, auténtica, honesta, reconfortante y pura. Es cierto. Es así. O lo era. El jardín ya no es el mismo, George. Ahora cruza una autopista de peaje; la excavadora se llevó por delante a los enanitos –"¿Enanitos?, ¡dejémonos de mariconadas!", resolvieron–; el aire se vició debido a una zona industrial en la que fabrican algo que no sé para qué sirve pero que me obligan a comprar. Pero eso no es lo peor: inventaron, a renglón seguido, los relojes digitales, la odiosa MTV, y un montón de aberraciones más; instauraron el culto al marketing, al break-even, al Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis, al ego que tú tanto aborrecías, y a la vulgaridad más lacerante; denostando y prohibiendo, por el camino, todo aquello que antes entendíamos era sagrado. Para terminar, edificaron millones de nichos de hormigón, que tapan el horizonte, y que nos venden, hatajo de hijos de la gran puta, a plazos de por vida. ¡Ay, George, cuánta razón tenías al avisarnos! "¡Cuidado con la oscuridad, tened cuidado con la oscuridad!", cantabas. Ojalá estuvieras aquí, de verdad. Y ojalá alguien me devolviera aquellas monedas de cinco pesetas y aquella fantástica jukebox llena de himnos de vida a 45 revoluciones por minuto.

ALLMAN BROTHERS, AT FILLMORE EAST

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS "AT FILLMORE EAST" IS THE WINNER OF TWM QUEST FOR THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS OF ROCK

Pocas sorpresas, por no decir ninguna, ha arrojado la votación de los visitantes y amigos de ThatWasMusic a la hora de elegir los mejores álbumes en directo de la historia del rock. La duda, si alguna cabía, era dilucidar si la balanza terminaría por decantarse del lado ocupado por la formidable banda sureña liderada por Duane y Gregg Allman, o bien por los legendarios Deep Purple. Sólo dos votos han separado a los primeros de los segundos en la encuesta. "At Fillmore East" (1971) y "Made in Japan" (1972) brillaron en una década que supondría la mayoría de edad para el rock; un tiempo de absoluta creatividad y libertad que permitió a muchas bandas dar rienda suelta a sus ideas y a su talento. Lo que se recogía en estudio era sublimado en directo, sin artificios, de forma honesta. El "Live Album" suponía, por tanto, una suerte de reválida, la prueba de fuego para aquellos que aspiraban a habitar en el Olimpo del Rock. Si no puedes mejorarlo sobre un escenario, no sirves. Ese parecía ser el lema. La modalidad, que había sido inaugurada por grupos como The Who, con su demoledor "Live at Leeds" (1970), o por Crosby Stills, Nash & Young, con el inenarrable "Four Way Street" (1971), llegaría a su cénit con el legendario triple LP "Yessongs" (1973), ampulosa producción de Yes, indiscutibles reyes del rock progresivo, y con "The Songs Remains the Same" (1976) de Led Zeppelin. Estas dos últimas obras vieron la luz acompañadas por películas de igual título. Los setenta fueron, en definitiva, la década mas asombrosa desde el punto de vista escénico. El rápido desarrollo de la tecnología –en cuanto a amplificación e iluminación, desarrollo de nuevos instrumentos (sintetizadores) y sistemas de grabación móviles– abocó a las grandes bandas a emprender tours cada vez más extensos y costosos. No siempre el éxito comercial acompañó esas giras mastodónticas; baste recordar cómo Emerson, Lake & Palmer acabaron, paradójicamente, arruinados en plena gloria wagneriana. Los excesos siempre se pagan. Los discos que hoy presentamos son paradigma y arquetipo de todo lo dicho. Verdaderas obras de arte con las que inauguramos 2010, un año en el que todos debemos intentar comprar cuanta música nos sea posible. No hay placer equiparable al coleccionismo. No olvidéis nunca eso. Sed felices.

JUSTIN HAYWARD, BLUE GUITAR

"THE VIEW FROM THE HILL" IS A MUST NOT ONLY FOR JUSTIN HAYWARD/MOODY BLUES FANS, BUT FOR ANY SERIOUS COLLECTOR. A TIMELESS MASTERPIECE. A HAND FULL OF BEAUTY.

No creo que un artista de la talla de Justin Hayward necesite de largas presentaciones. Todo el mundo sabe que es una de las piezas básicas y fundamentales de esa querida, casi entrañable, formación británica responsable de alguna de las canciones más célebres y amables de la historia del pop sinfónico, los Moody Blues. Hayward, en solitario, ha estampado su firma a unos cuantos discos maravillosos. Baste recordar el clásico "Blue Jays", junto a su compañero John Lodge, en 1975, o el magnífico "Songwriter" (1977). Durante los ochenta completó tres más ("Nightflight", "Moving Mountains" y "Classic Blue"), todos sumamente recomendables. El disco que hoy presentamos en ThatWasMusic es su único trabajo de estudio durante los años noventa. "The View From The Hill" (1996), es sin duda alguna la cumbre de su carrera como solista; una maravilla que hace difícil que el propio Hayward pueda batir el listón en el futuro. Aunque con su talento nunca se puede afirmar algo así de modo categórico. Los que conozcan este trabajo nos darán la razón. Un puñado de canciones bellísimas, muchas de ellas baladas al más puro estilo Moody Blues, excelemente producidas, mimadas en todos los detalles y arreglos, con unas letras formidables y un artista en plena forma, en el cénit de su carrera, cantando como nunca. "The View from the Hill" es un álbum introspectivo, poético, otoñal, emocionante. Un disco que enamora desde la primera audición y que gana terreno en el ánimo así se suceden las escuchas. Sencillamente, una obra ante la que hay que sacarse el sombrero. Pop de lujo, refinadísimo, con clase. No te lo pierdas bajo ningún concepto. Escúchalo y búscalo. Puedes comprarlo online fácilmente. Recuerda que te lo recomendó TWM, un blog que sólo se entretiene en lo sublime. Que a estas alturas de partido ya no estamos para bagatelas ni mediocridades.

GENTLE GIANT, A TASTE OF GLORY

"WE WANT TO EXPAND THE FRONTIERS OF CONTEMPORARY POPULAR MUSIC AT THE RISK OF BECOMING VERY UNPOPULAR"

La mejor forma de definir en pocas palabras a Gentle Giant es utilizar una declaración de principios que les animaba en los años setenta, y que aparecía en las notas interiores de su álbum "Acquiring the Taste": "Pretendemos expandir las fronteras de la música popular contemporánea aun a riesgo de hacer cosas impopulares". Los que conozcan bien a esta extraordinaria banda –sin duda alguna la más original, ecléctica, sorprendente y vanguardista del rock progresivo– entenderán la frase perfectamente. Gentle Giant eran fascinantemente complejos e imbricados, superando los gustos, patrones y planteamientos habituales del Art Rock de su tiempo, lo que ya es decir. Para los que desconozcan la incomparable música del Gigante Gentil y necesiten referencias, sólo podríamos decir que mezclaban la electricidad del rock; la atmósfera plácida del folk; la aventura sin patrón ni limitación del jazz; las armonías propias de la música clásica; sonidos y melodías medievales; aires juglarescos; arreglos de cuerda propios de un cuarteto de cámara; delirantes juegos y acrobacias vocales a cappella, y un sinfín de recursos estilísticos que provocan asombro incluso en la actualidad. Su concepción musical era tan adelantada a su tiempo que a día de hoy sigue vigente, vigorosa, fresca. Eran magos de lo imposible, del más difícil todavía. Más que tocar, jugaban, dialogaban entre ellos, deconstruían una melodía hasta quebrarla, sólo para volver a pegar los trozos un minuto más tarde, aunque en un nuevo orden silábico. Su dominio instrumental era sencillamente apabullante. En una pieza podían confluir guitarras eléctricas, acústicas, bajo, batería, percusiones, sintetizadores, flautas, violín, violoncello, xilofón y una avalancha de voces y coros ejecutando acrobacias impensables. Durante la segunda mitad de los setenta simplificaron sus planteamientos, buscando un sonido más comercial. Por esa razón, los discos editados entre 1976-1980 (de "Interview" a "Civilian"), si bien son interesantes y válidos, no revisten ni poseen el atractivo de los que hoy presentamos en ThatWasMusic: siete trabajos de estudio, fascinantes, y un excelente doble álbum en directo. Gentle Giant nunca superaron el listón comercial impuesto por bandas coetáneas como Genesis, Yes, E,L&P o King Crimson, pero rubricaron para la historia un legado sin parangón, que les sitúa en una categoría reservada sólo a virtuosos y pioneros de un territorio musical inexplorado, vetado para la inmensa mayoría.

ALMOST 40 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH, JIMI HENDRIX IS STILL THE ABSOLUTE KING OF GUITAR

La segunda votación de los amigos y visitantes de ThatWasMusic a la hora de elegir al mejor guitarrista de todos los tiempos no ha deparado muchas sorpresas. A pesar de los años transcurridos desde su muerte, en 1970, Jimi Hendrix sigue siendo, para la inmensa mayoría, el gran héroe de la guitarra. En su breve e intensa carrera grabó tres álbumes oficiales; arrasó en Monterrey y en Woodstock; deconstruyó el himno de Estados Unidos; consiguió hacer llorar y cantar a su guitarra, que parecía formar parte de su cuerpo, como un miembro más. Aun ardiendo, quemada, seguía gimiendo, acoplándose, prometiéndole fidelidad. Jimi fue el rey del wha-wha, del feedback, de la retroalimentación; su forma de tocar era absolutamente pagana, ritual, excesiva, delirante. Cada vez que le veo en filmaciones de época me asombro y entiendo el hecho de que publicaciones como Time o Rolling Stone le consideren el mejor guitarrista de la historia del rock. Hace sólo tres días, a sus muchos títulos se ha añadido uno más: la página Music Radar convocó una encuesta para decidir cuál era el mejor riff de guitarra de la historia. Probablemente "Layla", el desaforado grito de amor de Clapton, cosechó muchos votos, pero "Woodoo Child" se alzó en el podium de forma contundente. Lo mismo ha pasado en nuestro sondeo. Una vez más, Hendrix se muestra imbatible. Su trono sigue vacante.
